Designing in this way requires an updated design philosophy, where the control logic of the system is moved from hardware to firmware or software. Furthermore, these advantages are a reduction in the number of components required, lower system cost, and greater flexibility in adapting to unforeseen demands. When this board is plugged into the backplane, the hot-swap controller must perform the following operations perfectly:
First, monitor the power supply voltage, current on the board and the status signals of the subsystems on the board to determine if everything is working properly. If this is the case, the controller can assert the HEALTHY signal on the cPCI bus. In the event of a failure, the controller needs to react in a way that minimizes potential damage.
Second, test that the CPCI bus power is stable and use the /BRD_SEL signal to seat the board. When these conditions are met, the controller can connect the power system of the PCB board (circuit board) to the bus power supply. For power lines where the board draws high currents, power management may also need to control the rate of voltage rise to prevent transients that may disrupt the operation of other PCBs (circuit boards) in the system.
Third, monitor the control signals of the CPCI bus, especially /PCI_RST. The power manager must assert the local reset signal /LOCAL_PCI_RST for a certain period of time after all board level voltages have stabilized to ensure proper initialization of the system on the board.
Conversely, when the hot-swap controller detects that the PCB board (circuit board) is being unplugged from the system, it must ensure that power is disconnected from the edge of the board before the power connector is disconnected. Failure to do so will create arcs and transients on the power supply to the backplane that may interfere with other operating boards.
With the continuous improvement of board-level integration, the requirements for the role and complexity of power management are also increasing. Several devices may need to follow special power-up and power-down sequences. Even a single chip using multiple voltage support cores and I/O circuits may require specialized timing. By using DC-DC converters and point-of-load regulators, multiple power supplies are often provided locally on the board and may require separate monitoring and control functions.
A power management system can be implemented by combining standard power management integrated circuits with top-level control functions. While simple designs are possible, this approach quickly becomes unmanageable when one tries to provide the various functional and interface requirements of a standalone controller.
Instead of implementing the power management system from one or more predefined controller integrated circuits, a more efficient approach is to first consider those basic functions that are required to support the power management system. These functions can be divided into resources that support hardware measurement and control, and logic operations that support sequential and combinatorial processing. Table 1 lists some of the most common functions required to implement power management.
