Different materials have different conductivities, so using a combination of different materials is one way to reduce ground noise. When determining the best way to reduce ground noise, it is important to pay attention to the two key types of materials in the PCB that have the greatest impact on ground noise: the substrate on which the components are placed and the metal used for the conductive traces.
A well-constructed PCB should have a substrate with strong insulators and wires with high conductivity. The most common substrate and wire material combinations in PCBs are glass epoxy and copper. Since glass epoxy is an insulator, it does a good job of keeping the current where it should be in the copper wire in general applications.
However, designing high-speed and high-frequency PCBs is a challenge because they naturally generate a lot of ground noise. It's not a matter of materials; when designing PCBs that handle large amounts of current, the strongest insulators and conductors are also stressed. The structure of these materials often needs to be different from that used in other PCBs.
A new model involving single-ended microstrip lines allows copper lines to function with a lower-than-normal impedance, increasing their conductivity and reducing ground noise overall. High-conductivity copper wires simultaneously reduce many types of ground noise and crosstalk, improving signal integrity and reliability in high stress situations.
